What it is
Research overview
What MOTS-c is
MOTS-c stands for mitochondrial open reading frame of the 12S rRNA type-c. Its discovery paper in 2015 found a short open reading frame inside mitochondrial DNA that codes for this 16 residue peptide.
Its sequence is MRWQEMGYIFYPRKLR. PubChem gives the formula as C101H152N28O22S2.

Questions about MOTS-c?
Ask on WhatsAppWhat the research has looked at
The 2015 Cell Metabolism paper reported that skeletal muscle appears to be its main target in mice. It linked MOTS-c to the folate pathway and to AMPK, an energy sensing enzyme, and studied mice on high fat diets and ageing mice.
Later reviews cover work on exercise, insulin sensitivity and ageing models. Most data are from cells and rodents, and reviewers say human studies are still early.

Where MOTS-c sits among mitochondrial peptides
MOTS-c was not the first peptide found in mitochondrial DNA. Humanin, found earlier, showed that short open reading frames there can code for signalling peptides, and the 2015 team searched for more.
That idea, that mitochondria send their own peptide signals to the rest of the cell, is what makes MOTS-c interesting to researchers.
Storage for an oxidation prone sequence
MOTS-c contains two methionines and one tryptophan. Peptide suppliers warn these residues oxidise easily, and that such peptides have a more limited shelf life.
The best defence is a sealed vial kept at -20 °C or colder, shielded from light, with the cap opened only after the vial has warmed up. Avoid keeping it dissolved for long.

Regulatory status
In Australia
WADA, the World Anti-Doping Agency, named MOTS-c on its 2025 Prohibited List. It sits in group S4, hormone and metabolic modulators, as an example of an AMPK activator.
The list in force from 1 January 2026 still names it in that group.
Glow Labs offers MOTS-c for laboratory research only.

FAQ
Your questions
What is MOTS-c?
A 16 amino acid peptide encoded by mitochondrial DNA, first reported in 2015.
What is the difference between MOTS-c and SS-31?
MOTS-c is a natural mitochondrial-derived peptide. SS-31 is a synthetic four residue peptide designed to bind cardiolipin in the mitochondrial membrane.
Which MOTS-c sizes are available?
20mg and 10mg vials. Choose the size on this page before adding it to your bag.
How should MOTS-c be stored?
Freeze the sealed vial, keep it dark, and open it only after it has warmed to room temperature. MOTS-c contains two methionines and a tryptophan, which oxidise easily, so limit how often the vial is opened and avoid long storage in solution.
Do you need a prescription for MOTS-c?
MOTS-c is not named in the Poisons Standard, the federal list that sorts substances into schedules such as Schedule 4, prescription only. We checked the version in force from 30 September 2026. A search of the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG) on 26 October 2026 found no product containing MOTS-c. This page does not say what that means for any use outside the lab, because Glow Labs sells MOTS-c for laboratory research only. In sport, WADA bans MOTS-c at all times. Its 2025 and 2026 lists name it in group S4 as an AMPK activator, and so does the 2027 list that takes effect on 1 January 2027.
