What it is
Research overview
What bacteriostatic water is
A US product label describes bacteriostatic water as a sterile, nonpyrogenic water preparation. It contains 0.9% benzyl alcohol, or 9 mg per mL. The same label lists a 1.1% version too.
The label adds the benzyl alcohol as a preservative that holds back bacteria. It supplies the water in a multiple-entry vial that can be drawn from more than once. Plain sterile water has no preservative. A US sterile water label supplies it only in single-use containers.

Questions about Bacteriostatic Water?
Ask on WhatsAppHow labs use it
In the lab it serves as a diluent, a liquid used to dissolve or dilute a dry solid. The label gives a pH of 5.7, within a range of 4.5 to 7.0.
The label also carries a warning. It says benzyl alcohol has been linked to toxicity in newborn babies, and it marks the product not for use in neonates. Where a preservative-free liquid is needed, sterile water is used instead.

Bacteriostatic water and sterile water compared
The label limits matter. Bacteriostatic water is designed for multiple entries, while preservative-free sterile water suits single use.
In the lab, the right liquid depends on what the solid is and what its manufacturer advises. The label itself says to follow the directions of the solid's maker on the choice of liquid.
Glow Labs sells it as a general laboratory supply only. Our guide to bacteriostatic water vs sterile water covers the two side by side.

Storage and checks
Its label gives a storage range of 20 to 25 °C, controlled room temperature, rather than the fridge.
The label says not to use it unless the liquid is clear and the seal is intact, and to use aseptic technique for each entry into the vial.
