What is epitalon?

Here is the short version before the detail.

What it isA synthetic peptide made of four amino acids
SequenceAla-Glu-Asp-Gly, shortened to AEDG
FormulaC14H22N4O9
Molecular weight390.35 g/mol
Modelled onEpithalamin, a cow pineal gland extract

A 2025 review describes 25 years of work on it, done in test tubes, in animals and with computer models. The same review says it is still unclear whether the effects found so far are the only ways it works.

Three names

Search pages use three names, and they are easy to mix up.

  • Epitalon and epithalon are the same compound. The two spellings come from different ways of turning the Russian name into English. Some papers also write epithalone.
  • Epithalamin is something else. It is a mix of many peptides pulled out of animal pineal glands.

A 2026 review keeps the two apart on purpose. It treats epitalon as one defined chemical and the epithalamin studies as older background. That matters because a finding for the extract does not automatically apply to the single peptide.

Where it came from

The story starts with epithalamin. From the 1980s, a team in St Petersburg led by Vladimir Khavinson studied pineal gland extracts in old animals. A 1992 paper, for example, gave epithalamin to old rats and measured their life span and melatonin levels.

The team later worked out the amino acids in the extract and built a short peptide from them. That peptide became epitalon. A 2002 paper by Khavinson and a co-worker reviews this early extract work.

Structure

Epitalon is about as simple as a peptide gets. Four amino acids are joined in a row:

  1. Alanine (Ala, A)
  2. Glutamic acid (Glu, E)
  3. Aspartic acid (Asp, D)
  4. Glycine (Gly, G)

Two of the four, glutamic acid and aspartic acid, carry acid groups. That gives the molecule a lot of oxygen for its size, which you can see in the formula. At about 390 g/mol it is tiny next to most research peptides. Our guide on what peptides are explains how amino acids link into chains.

What was studied

This table lays the main papers out by year, by what was tested on, and by who ran the work.

Telomeres are protective caps on the ends of chromosomes. Telomerase is the enzyme that can rebuild them. The 2003 cell paper and the 2025 cell paper both measured these in cells, not in living people.

The 2003 mouse study is a good reminder to read past the headlines. The authors reported that average life span did not change between groups, even though some other markers did.

Who did the work

On 25 October 2026 we searched PubMed. We looked for papers with epitalon or epithalon in the title or abstract, and found 116 records. Of those, 71 had Khavinson as an author. That is about 61 percent of the whole field from one research network.

That is not a sign the work is wrong. But science trusts a finding more once other labs repeat it. The 2025 Brunel study is one of the few from a separate group. It looked at cells only.

What is not known

The 2026 review is the clearest summary of the gaps. It describes epitalon as biologically active in the lab but clinically unproven. It lists these open questions:

  • Human data are limited to small studies and one older controlled trial.
  • No large, well-powered randomised trial has been done.
  • There is not enough data on how the body handles it over time.
  • Long-term safety has not been worked out.
  • Quality and legal questions are still open. A US FDA advisory review in 2026 did not settle them.

A ClinicalTrials.gov check on 25 October 2026 found one registered study naming epitalon, still enrolling.

In Australia

No Australian government page we read in October 2026 names epitalon, so we state nothing about its legal or sport standing here.

The research vial

Epitalon is supplied as a dry, freeze-dried powder in a sealed vial. Like most freeze-dried peptides it can take up water from the air, so keeping it dry matters. Fridge, freezer and light are all covered in how to store peptides.

If you work in longevity research, MOTS-c is a very different peptide, and our MOTS-c guide explains how. Ready to order? See epitalon on our product page. Epitalon is on pre-order right now. Orders leave Gippsland VIC with tracking and arrive in 2-3 days, and every vial is sold for research use only.

FAQ

Is epitalon the same as epithalon?

Yes. They are two spellings of the same four amino acid peptide. Epithalamin is different: it is the older pineal extract epitalon was modelled on.

Is epitalon a peptide?

Yes. It is a tetrapeptide, which means a chain of four amino acids joined by peptide bonds.

What is epitalon made of?

Alanine, glutamic acid, aspartic acid and glycine, in that order. Its formula is C14H22N4O9.

Does epitalon work?

That is not settled. Cell and animal studies report changes in telomerase, melatonin and other markers. A 2026 review calls it clinically unproven, with no large human trials.

Is epitalon available in Australia?

Glow Labs lists epitalon as a pre-order compound for laboratory research only. We make no claim about its regulatory status.
