What it is
Research overview
What tesamorelin is
Tesamorelin is an analogue of growth hormone releasing factor, the brain hormone that prompts the pituitary to release growth hormone. PubChem lists its earlier code, TH9507, and a mass of about 5136 g/mol.
It is one of the largest peptides in our range, close in size to tirzepatide.

Questions about Tesamorelin?
Ask on WhatsAppWhat the trials examined
A 2007 phase 3 trial in the New England Journal of Medicine enrolled 412 people with HIV. They had gained belly fat during HIV treatment. It measured visceral fat by CT scan, along with blood fats and IGF-1.
That work led to US approval of the finished medicine, sold as Egrifta. It is approved to reduce excess belly fat in adults with HIV-related lipodystrophy. The label notes it is not for general weight management.

Tesamorelin versus other growth hormone peptides
Growth hormone research peptides fall into two broad groups. GHRH analogues, such as tesamorelin and CJC-1295, act on the GHRH receptor in the pituitary.
Secretagogues such as ipamorelin act on a different receptor, the one used by GHRP-6. The 1998 ipamorelin paper used GHRH and GHRP blockers to show that split.

Handling freeze-dried tesamorelin
The US label stores its finished vial in the original box to protect it from light. For research powder, suppliers advise dark storage at -20 °C or colder with desiccant.
Peptide labs also warn against long storage of any dissolved peptide.

Regulatory status
In Australia
The approval above was given in the US, for the finished medicine Egrifta. Our tesamorelin is a raw research peptide for bench use only.
Tesamorelin itself does not appear by name in Australia's Poisons Standard. The standard does carry a group entry for growth hormone releasing hormones, or GHRHs, placed in Schedule 4 as prescription only medicines. Appendix D, clause 5 also lists GHRHs among poisons that must not be possessed without authority, such as a prescription. Tesamorelin is one of the GHRH analogues covered above.

FAQ
Your questions
What is tesamorelin?
A synthetic analogue of growth hormone releasing hormone, first coded TH9507.
Is tesamorelin a steroid?
No. It is a peptide, a chain of amino acids. Steroids are a different kind of molecule.
What is the difference between tesamorelin and ipamorelin?
Tesamorelin acts like GHRH. Ipamorelin is a small five residue peptide that works through a GHRP-like receptor instead.
Is tesamorelin approved in Australia?
The approval on record is a US one, for the finished medicine Egrifta. Australia's Poisons Standard does not name tesamorelin, but its GHRH family is in Schedule 4 as prescription only.
How should tesamorelin be stored?
Keep the sealed research vial cold, dry and dark. The US label for the finished medicine stresses protection from light. Peptide makers say to let a cold vial warm up before opening it, and not to keep it long once dissolved.
