What it is
Research overview
What MT-2 is
MT-2 is a ring shaped peptide. Its 1996 pilot study describes a lactam bridge between aspartic acid and lysine that closes the ring, giving the structure Ac-Nle-Asp-His-D-Phe-Arg-Trp-Lys-NH2.
PubChem gives its formula as C50H69N15O9, almost the same as PT-141, its close relative.

Questions about MT-2?
Ask on WhatsAppWhat has been studied, and the risks reported
The 1996 Life Sciences study was a small single blind pilot in three healthy men. It recorded side effects such as nausea, fatigue, stretching and yawning.
Since then, published case reports have linked unregulated melanotan use to serious problems, including a 2011 report of melanoma. A 2017 review summarises these risks.
No product containing MT-2 is on the Australian register.

TGA testing of melanotan products
In 2026 the TGA tested seized Melanotan II nasal spray bottles and found the amount of peptide varied widely between bottles with the same label.

Storage of a cyclic peptide
The ring makes MT-2 sturdier than linear alpha-MSH. But it still contains tryptophan. Peptide handling guides list tryptophan among the residues most prone to oxidation.
Freeze the dry vial, keep it in the dark, and avoid opening it while cold.

Regulatory status
In Australia
According to the TGA, Melanotan II is a prescription-only medicine in Australia and no product containing it is on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods. The TGA has warned the public against melanotan tanning products. In 2026 it fined one NSW-based person $101,412, through 27 infringement notices, for the alleged unlawful supply of Melanotan II.
The TGA says supplying melanotan tanning products without a doctor's prescription is illegal. The Therapeutic Goods Act also bans advertising prescription-only medicines to the public, and the TGA says advertising melanotan to Australians is illegal.
This page summarises the published research and TGA statements on MT-2 for reference.

FAQ
Your questions
Is melanotan 2 legal in Australia?
No. The TGA says Melanotan II is a prescription-only medicine. No product containing it is approved, and supplying it without a prescription is illegal. Advertising it to the public is illegal too.
What is melanotan 2?
MT-2 is a lab made, ring shaped analogue of alpha-MSH. PT-141, bremelanotide, has a near identical formula; it ends in a carboxylic acid where MT-2 ends in an amide.
Is melanotan 2 safe?
No product containing it is on the Australian register. Case reports and a 2017 review describe serious problems with unregulated use, including skin cancer reports.
How should melanotan 2 be stored?
Frozen, sealed and dark, with the vial warmed before opening. Its tryptophan is prone to oxidation.
