What it is
Research overview
What MT-1 is
Afamelanotide is alpha-MSH with two swaps: norleucine at position 4 and D-phenylalanine at position 7. PubChem lists the old name Melanotan for it, and the code NDP-MSH.
It is a linear chain of 13 residues, with no ring.

Ask on WhatsAppWhat the research examined
A 2015 New England Journal of Medicine paper reported two trials of afamelanotide implants. The people in them had erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP), a rare condition that causes painful reactions to light. The trials measured sun exposure time and phototoxic reactions.
A finished implant, Scenesse, is approved in the US for that condition. Since 2020 it has also been registered in Australia, where it is a prescription-only medicine for the same use.
A 2017 review looks at the unregulated use of melanotan I and II for tanning. It cites case reports of changes in moles, though it says firm proof of a link is still lacking.

Why MT-1 and tanning products are not the same thing
The approved afamelanotide medicine is an implant with its own US label. The MT-1 research vial is not SCENESSE and has not been through the testing behind that medicine. Products sold online as tanning aids are a different matter.
The 2017 review raises concerns about how those products are prepared and used. The TGA has also warned the public against tanning products containing melanotan.

Storage of the 13 residue peptide
Afamelanotide still carries tryptophan, a residue that oxidises easily. Keep the vial dark, sealed and frozen.
Peptide suppliers recommend letting the cold vial warm before opening, so no moisture condenses on the powder.

Regulatory status
In Australia
The TGA says it is illegal to supply tanning products containing melanotan without a prescription. Afamelanotide is registered in Australia as the SCENESSE implant, a prescription-only medicine. Glow Labs supplies MT-1 for laboratory research only and never as a tanning product.

FAQ
Your questions
Is melanotan 1 the same as afamelanotide?
Yes. Melanotan I and MT-1 are older names for afamelanotide.
What is the difference between melanotan 1 and 2?
MT-1 is a 13 residue linear analogue of alpha-MSH. MT-2 is a shorter, ring shaped analogue closed by a lactam bridge.
Is melanotan legal in Australia?
Only with a prescription. The TGA warns that supplying tanning products containing melanotan without one is illegal. Afamelanotide is registered in Australia under the name SCENESSE. That product is a prescription-only implant for adults with erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP).
Is MT-1 sold as a tanning product?
No. Glow Labs supplies MT-1 only as a laboratory research peptide. The TGA warns against tanning products containing melanotan.
How should MT-1 be stored?
Keep the sealed vial frozen and in the dark. Its tryptophan residue oxidises easily, so open the vial only after it reaches room temperature, close it quickly, and avoid long storage once dissolved.
